BuDhaGirl Scientific Board: Dr. Eric Nestler

This month, we're interviewing the noted scientists of the BuDhaGirl Scientific Advisory Board (BSAB). Today, we're introducing you to Eric Nestler MD PhD. Eric is a Founding Member of the BSAB, and the Director of the Friedman Brain Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. At Mount Sinai, the goal of Dr. Nestler's research is to better understand the molecular mechanisms of addiction and depression.

BuDhaGirl: What techniques can we use to de-clutter and refocus; or what steps can we take daily to increase our brain function and heighten creativity and focus?

Eric Nestler: The most important things that people can do every day to optimize their physical and emotional health are to follow a healthy diet and to exercise vigorously and regularly.

BDG: Why is "mindfulness" entering mainstream society now?

EN: I’ve become increasingly convinced that mindfulness is another crucial feature of health and happiness. Every individual has the capacity to overcome a good deal of chronic ailments (aside from medically life-threatening diseases) by using the mind’s power and reparative potential.

BDG: Why is mindfulness important?

EN: We live in extremely fast-moving and stressful times, but it is essential to take the time and attend to one’s well-being.
