A Bystander

“The world is a dangerous place not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” Albert Einstein

There's no question that those who "do evil" make the world dangerous. Absolutely. Albert's broader point is that that evil can be mitigated when
we're brave enough to "run interference." (Remember, Einstein was a Jewish intellectual who managed to escape Nazi Germany.) Pick your target: Racism, sexism, ageism, religious intolerance, animal cruelty. There's plenty of work to be done.

It is so frustrating to see really talented, and very wealthy people not contributing to the overall well being of others. I often wonder if trading places for a day with someone who is hungry, oppressed, a victim of addiction or abused would not make us act more compassionately. Being in the proverbial “someone else’s shoes.”

We have a responsibility to ourselves and others to live life joyfully, and we can do that even more so when we are helping and giving to others.
