Hindsight

Har, har. When preparing for 2020, I likened it to “perfect vision.” Boy did I get it wrong.

2020 has had nothing 2020 (perfect) about it. What it has had are lessons. Lessons in what to do, what not to do, lessons in being prepared, and lessons about the unexpected.

So, I guess that if there is anything we learned in 2020 is hindsight. The question is whether we will put this hindsight to good use?

Maybe the first lesson is not to take life for granted, or your lifestyle for granted. The life-paths of the past do not carry the same importance as they once did. Family, education, work-life balance, relationships, money, homeownership, transportation, food are all being re-imagined.  It is hard to let go of what has given us great success, acknowledging that the system was not perfect; yet this system did create the most advanced human civilization to date.

How can we improve? How do we learn from the past? How do we use hindsight to our advantage?

That indeed is the question.

For me, I realize now, more than ever, that there is only today. That I must live today to its absolute fullest. Today, I need to make sure that the people I love, know that I love them. Today I need to put on my thinking cap and inspire my team. Today I have to nourish my body. Today I have to have moments of reflection. Today I must find joy. Today I have to live in a manner that if I can no longer have hindsight…that I won’t regret it.

Hindsight is only good when you are still able to do something about things.
